Just like you, leopard geckos also need a comfortable home to live in. That's why you should create an ideal setup like their native habitat. These little guys don't demand much. You just need to make sure their tank is comfortable to eat, sleep, and hide so they can live long and happily. Here are some important notes about the ideal habitat for leopard geckos.

  • Tank Shape and Size

While your pet might be small, leopard geckos still require much space for exercise and activity. The minimum size for a tank is 10 gallons, but I always advise that the owner ought to use a tank of at least 20 gallons or larger. A leopard gecko always needs a lot of space for them not to be stressed.

  • Lighting

Since leopard geckos come from the Middle East, they love light! Provide a lighting setup with 14 hours of light and 10 hours dark in summer and 12 hours of light and 12 hours dark in winter. You can also use a tank heater to regulate the temperature of your tank. Thus, you can create an ideal leopard gecko habitat.

  • Tank Substrate

Substrates are important in tanks. You need to be careful when choosing the substrate by avoiding hazardous materials. I use reptile carpet as my top choice because it eliminates the risk of impaction. If you want to mimic their native habitat, try adding flat stones or tiles.

  • Humidity

Leopard geckos need the right humidity level to aid in domestication and avoid dehydration. Ideally, keep the tank humidity between 20 and 40%. You can install a hygrometer to always monitor the humidity level. If it is too humid, just replace the water container with a smaller one and vice versa.

  • Shelter and Hides

Every leopard gecko needs a little protection, or, as we call it, a hide. This place provides a sense of security so they can rest comfortably for a while. I always make sure my gecko tank has three types of hides: warm, cool, and moist.

Conclusion

Setting up the ideal leopard gecko habitat feels like building a cozy home for them. Provide them with moisture, light, and hiding places to give your pet a better life. So, treat your leopard gecko like a VIP.
